Personal

Sam Rao Yoga I was born in Kampala, Uganda. Both my parents were from India. I was educated in Uganda, followed by High School and University in Vancouver, Canada. I came to UK in early 1971 when I met and married my wife, Coral.

I am now 58 Years old and I have lived in the Crowthorne and Bracknell area, with my wife and our two sons, for just over 25 Years. Early in my school days, in Uganda, I was encouraged, by my father, to practice yoga. He also taught me the art of "latti". It is an ancient martial art of self defence using a 5 ft long by 2 inch round wooden staff.

I did not seriously practice yoga until 1996, following an injury to my lower back (the result of a wrong move in a squash game). Since then I found myself moving further away from my regular gym sessions and more towards Yoga.

During 1999 I met my yoga teacher, Ruth White, an inspirational and dynamic Iyengar yoga teacher. Ruth has practiced with and been coached by Mr. BKS Iyengar.

My Teacher qualifications are with Ruth and it took me 3 Years to complete her wonderful programme. I am very interested in understanding the human body and how regular practice of yoga can benefit and affect the body, mind and spirit. I run several yoga classes in the Wokingham, Crowthorne, Bracknell and Sunningdale areas and continue to teach mixed ability yoga classes (beginners as well as intermediates) with emphasis on the effects of the postures on the body as a whole. My aim is to build a practice to encourage more men to take up yoga classes. I hold regular yoga classes to introduce Men to yoga.
