1) What is Yoga? It is an ancient ( over 5000 years old ) science of body and mind. Yoga practice (postures) were first recorded about 2,500 Yrs ago by a sage called Patangali. His comments and observations formed the basis of what we know today about Yoga.
2) Types of Yoga. Most common form of Yoga practice is known as Hatha Yoga. There are several derivatives… Iyengar yoga, Ashtanga yoga … Vinni etc.. but all of them are based on the inner workings of the body in conjunction with mind. Every posture has a multitude of benefits which becomes more obvious as yoga practice progresses.
3) Is it difficult? Yoga is the easiest forms of physical and mental development. If you had to teach someone to walk… where would you start? The whole of the human body, its muscles, veins, arteries, nerves etc have to come in to play to take the simplest of steps. Doing a yoga practice is therefore addressing not just the physical ( muscles, nerves, veins, arteries, tendons, ligaments etc..) but it also brings in the mind to allow a body to stretch and open the channels for energy in the body to flow.
4) With just 2 types of postures, you can stretch every muscle in the body, use every joint in the body and everything else connected to it…. So lets try:
a) Up-Face and Down-Face Dog. See if you can visualise the spine, knees, hips, ankles, neck, shoulders, wrists, elbows etc.. and how far the joints have opened. Also visualise the main muscles at the front and at the back of the body. When any muscle stretches there are several nerves, tendons, ligaments associated with the muscle..
